First “Hakuouki” Film to Include All-Star Music Composer Kenji Kawai and Singer Aika Yoshioka

The first movie in the Hakuouki series, which began in 2008 as a video game, will be released this summer. The movie, Hakuouki the Movie: Chapter 1: Kyoto Ranbu, will release on Aug. 24 in 31 theaters throughout Japan. The second round of advance ticket sales for the movie began on July 6. Furthermore, new staff on the movie have been revealed: Kenji Kawai will handle the music and Aika Yoshioka will be in charge of the theme song. Production of the movie is being undertaken by a wonderful lineup of staff.

A special bonus has been prepared for the second round of advance ticket sales. Those who buy an advance ticket will receive five postcards that use scenes from the movies. On the front of each postcard is the main visual of each character. This special gift is a collector’s item not to be missed.

Kenji Kawai, who is in charge of the movie’s music, is a well-known composer among anime fans known for his work on many of Mamoru Oshii’s films, including Patlabor and Ghost in the Shell 2: Innocence. This time, he is challenging himself with the popular female-oriented series Hakuouki. A point to pay attention to is how Kawai’s world of characteristically solid-sounding music will color this movie.

Aika Yoshioka is an artist who has performed just about every theme song in the Hakuouki series. Continuing with this movie, she will once again display her prowess.

The Hakuouki series began is a romance adventure game called Hakuouki Shinsengumi Kitan. After the game was released, its popularity was magnified even more by it being ported to different platforms, made into drama CDs, and more. The series also progressed into a TV anime and OVA series. The series’ first movie, Kyoto Ranbu, will tell a new a new story that is planned to span across two movies. Many of the staff on the movie are veterans to the series, including director Osamu Yamasaki and character designer and chief animation director Atsuko Nakajima.
