Unique English-Teaching Anime “Maji de Otaku na English! Ribbon-chan” Beings Airing

On July 5, the broadcast of the anime Maji de Otaku na English! Ribbon-chan: Eigo de Tatakau Mahou Shoujo the TV began on TV Tokyo. The anime is broadcast every Friday at 1:53 a.m. The original work, Magika Risshu Ribbon-chan: Eigo de Tatakau Mahou Shoujo, features cute illustrations and “vaguely familiar dialogue” in English. The work was sold at the 2011 Comic Market and it picked up popularity. It was created by the indie circle Electromagnetic Wave, which Pop, who is known for Moeru Eitango: Moetan, belongs to.

In addition to Pop being the original author and character planner, other staff on the anime includes Yoshihito Nishoji as director, Motofumi Nakajo as series composer and scriptwriter, Nobuyuki Kitajima as chief animation director, and Yuko Sugiyama as art director.

The anime is being produced by AIC Group’s AIC Frontier. The main cast includes Sakura Tange as Nanairo Ribbon, Hisako Kanemoto as Bell, and Rina Sato as Garnett. The rest of the cast is rounded out with Yu Kobayashi, Shiho Kakuma, Hiroko Igarashi, Takayuki Kondo, and Yuya Murakami.

The show is narrated by Keiji Fujiwara. As a characteristic of the show, there is also an English narration. This is be carried out by Shiori Kawana.

The anime follows Ribbon-chan who becomes a magical girl after forming a contract with a strange, self-proclaimed familiar cat named Toner. Ribbon-chan aims to be a superhero who can sing and dance for a sell-out crowd at Tokyo Dome. She becomes friends with Bell and Garnett, who also signed contracts with a familiar, and takes on missions to protect peace on Earth. A harsh battle once again unfolds for Ribbon-chan and the rest...is the story that is expected, but since the broadcast was decided in a hurry, production started with no such preparations being made. Instead of being tasked with protecting world peace, Ribbon-chan is tasked with protecting the delivery of the show. Being set around such a strange premise, many are looking forward to seeing more from this anime.
