The omnibus anime film Short Peace, which is on the cutting edge of Japanese anime and looks to redefine expressionality using the medium, will finally release on July 20. The film features four short works by directors Katsuhiro Otomo, Shuhei Morita, Hiroaki Ando, and Hajime Katoki.
On June 22, a talk session titled “Meet the Filmmaker” was held at the Apple Store in Ginza. Before the release of the movie, the four filmmakers gathered. The venue was wrapped in enthusiasm due to the event being the first talk session the directors have held with the general public.
Short Peace consists of the anime shorts “Combustible” by director Otomo, “Tsukumo” by director Morita, “Gambo” by director Ando, and “A Farewell to Arms” by director Katoki. The opening sequence produced by director Koji Morimoto is also a highlight not to be missed. The works are all themed around Japan and depict the country’s traditional culture, history, subculture, and future.
At the event, director Otomo explained, “I wanted to make something like a picture scroll, so I turned a B4-size piece of copy paper sideways and drew a storyboard. Also, I thought that drawing the character designs myself like that might make them more like ukiyoe.” Director Morita went on to share, “I wanted to make a work permeated with the interestingness of folklore, legends, and the like.” Director Ando followed up by stating his commitment to the project: “I thought about how to expand the schema of the project ‘Bears vs. Demons’ and how to deliver the feeling of a painting.” Director Katoki finished up by displaying his enthusiasm: “I want to convey to today’s young people the shock I received after reading director Otomo’s original manga.”
