Your Chance to Thoroughly Study Japanese Anime! DHU to Hold Program Intended for Foreign Students

The main campus of Digital Hollywood University (DHU) in Chiyoda, Tokyo is a university with achievements in IT business, English, and creative fields. In particular, various talents in the creative fields of anime and comics have been discovered and trained at DHU.

This summer, DHU will hold the “Summer Program 2013,” which is targeted toward foreign students interested in Japan’s pop culture. Focusing mainly on Japan’s important content of anime, various curricula will be implemented. With the brand assessment of being a “university where you can study in detail Japan’s pop culture” and a “Cool Japan university,” they aim to increase their image in regard to being an overseas partner university and a Japanese language school. Furthermore, they anticipate an increase in foreign students by means of a viral effect due to those who complete the university’s program and return to their respective countries.

For the “Summer Program 2013,” Masaki Tsuji is in charge of checking the curriculum. Tsuji is the head of DHU’s International Anime Research Department, and was the scenario writer on such works as Astro Boy, Sasae-san, and Lupin the Third. He has been deeply connected to Japanese anime for many years as a scenario writer who supported the anime industry. Using the most of his career, he has constructed a curriculum that will teach students in detail about Japanese anime, from its inception until the present day.

This program will be held from July 8-12 at DHU’s Surugadai campus. Starting with Tsuji’s lectures, other professionals from the anime industry will discuss knowledge and techniques regarding anime, providing content for students to be able to deeply understand the appeal of Japanese anime.

There won’t just be lectures, though. Also planned is a field trip to an animation studio, training in animation production, and a cosplay karaoke event to celebrate the end of the program. The cost of the program is 100,000 yen for the classes and 48,000 yen for lodging (prices include tax). However, food and transportation are not included in these costs. So for those thinking about attending, take special note of this.
