On April 20, the newest movie in the popular anime series Detective Conan, Detective Conan: Private Eye in the Distant Sea, was released in Japan. On the same day, another piece of big news was announced. That news is the decision to begin production on the animated movie Lupin III vs. Detective Conan: The Movie.
The announcement was screened as a teaser in theaters. The video was mysterious and showed Lupin III and Conan opposite each other. With Conan bravely saying, “Shall we settle this?” the curious teaser is making fans expect a full-blown showdown between the two. Also announced is a country-wide Toho roadshow that will take place in December. This big movie will be released over the New Year’s holiday. It seems that the thief and the great detective will pick up attention from all over Japan this winter.
Roughly one month after the excitement of this announcement, a teaser was also broadcast during the regular TV time slot for Detective Conan on May 18. However, this time, it was Lupin III who did the talking, saying, “Let’s settle this!” It’s only natural that there would be a “Lupin Ver.” of this trailer in response to the “Conan Ver.” shown in theaters.
Both versions of the teaser are now available on the movie’s official site, so fans can enjoy both of them together.
Lupin III began as a manga by Monkey Punch that was first serialized in Weekly Manga Action in 1967. Characters from the series are loved even today, and the series has spawned several anime adaptations.
Detective Conan, created by Gosho Aoyama, began serialization in Weekly Shonen Sunday in 1994. The work became hugely popular in 1996 when it was adapted into an anime. Since 1997, a movie for the series has been released yearly, and they has become known as the “national anime movies” of Japan.
As a commemorative project for Nippon TV’s 55th anniversary and Yomiuri TV’s for 50th anniversary, these two characters appeared together for the first time in the 2009 TV program Friday Special Roadshow. This surprising collaboration was widely talked about.
Now, these two appearing together for the second time will occur on the big screen. The movie will have a completely original story and their showdown will be on a bigger scale. How will the showdown between the world’s greatest thief and the great detective end? Many fans are waiting to find out.
