Report: “Evangelion Art Exhibition” Held in Australia

“Evangelion Art Exhibition”

The “Evangelion Art Exhibition” was held in Gold Coast, Australia and introduced behind the scenes material from Rebuild of Evangelion. This is, of course, the same place that also hosts the pop culture festival “QPOW” and the “Gold Coast Film Festival.” The Evangelion exhibition was held in a room in the Gold Coast City Gallery’s first basement.

The concept of this exhibit was to show the background materials of the anime’s production. The exhibit began by comparing images and their original panels and projecting the original film and the making of it. Furthermore, there was an area where attendees could draw manga and another for selling goods. This exhibit of original images showed that the high quality anime of which Japan is so proud is all based on hand-drawn artwork. Attendees were able to see that the images are completed through a repetitious series of small checks - precisely “behind the scene” of popular anime.

Fans visited the venue uninterrupted to gaze intently at the exhibit. Also, it’s no longer the case that “anime is for young boys only” - even in Australia this seemed to be the same. Not only men, but groups of female friends and couples attended the exhibit in large numbers.

The onsite shop and library usually also carry books on how to draw manga, and it seems there is a big demand in Gold Coast from those who’d like to create Japanese style anime and manga by themselves. Considering this, it feels as if holding the “Evangelion Art Exhibition” in Gold Coast was a really valuable thing. As for further plans for the exhibit, it is scheduled to move around to several other Australian cities.
