What do you think of when you hear the word “doll”? Antique dolls made of ceramics? Or possibly a fashion doll like Barbie? Currently, there is a type of doll whose fanbase is expanding all over the world. We went to the world’s biggest doll event, “Dolls Party,” to find the answer.
On March 10 at the ATC Hall on Osaka, the doll event “Hometown Dollpa Osaka 7” was held. The event was sponsored by the company Volks, and we were able to do exclusive coverage of the event.
Even from early morning on the day of the event, fans’ love and enthusiasm was clear to see as a long line formed outside the venue. Aside from being an event for fans to get together and mingle with one another, special dolls that could only be bought at the event were being sold, and fans eagerly awaited getting a numbered ticket for their chance.
Let’s take a look at some of the limited dolls for sale at the event. From the Super Dollfie series were Belle & Claude (The Prince of Love) and Claude (The Beast of Darkness), and from the Dollfie Dream series were the After School Akihabara Girls along with a full lineup of outfits. Also for sale were one-of-a-kind one-off models that captivated fans’ gazes and had them watering at the mouth.
Another characteristic of the event was the extremely impressive lineup of products being sold by amatuer dealers. Each booth was colored with an abundant variety of outfits that are well known among fans, such as the outfit from Gosick and Japanese kimonos. It was a familiar sight as many fans lined up to buy outfits from popular anime and game characters for their dolls. Also available were many items for enthusiasts including doll-size weapons, food, and eyes. The event really had something for every kind of doll fan.
Aside from the items on display and for sale, the event also featured stage events. One that had a great reaction from fans was a bingo tournament with a variety of goods up for grabs. The one thing we noticed more than anything else from our coverage was Volks’ commitment to their fans.
