Gargantia on the Verdurous Planet, the TV anime that began airing last month, become a hot topic in March when Blu-ray discs containing the first two episodes were given out for free at Anime Contents Expo 2013. The anime is directed by Kazuya Murata of Fullmetal Alchemist: The Sacred Star of Milos fame, and the series composer is Gen Urobuchi of Madoka Magica fame. This is an original story that is not to be missed!

We’ve received comments from the voice cast about the anime and their respective characters.

Now that the post-recording for the anime has begun, what are your impressions of the work so far?

Kaito Ishikawa (Ledo): A highlight of this anime is its engrossing world and lively characters. All of the details of its world have been fleshed out, like the history of Earth and space and how humanity had gone on living up until the time the anime is set in. Because of this, the fact that those living on the fleet are doing everything they can to survive is conveyed.

Hisako Kanemoto (Amy): The difference in the mood of the first part and second part of episode 1 is impressive. The extremely tension-filled world quickly becomes laid-back and warm, and I think that those who see it will be surprised. One highlight of the anime is that all of its characters are lively, and it’s fun watching them. It also accurately depicts those living casually inside the city. “What kind of jobs do these people have? What are their lives like?” The characters are modeled to answer these questions. More than that, I think the charm is the feeling of closeness they have.

Sugita Tomokazu (Chamber): Personally, I am always enthralled by works for which Gen Urobuchi wrote the script. This work has the impression that the disposition is different from Urobuchi’s usual work. Since post-recording hasn’t yet ended, I still don’t know what will happen, whether the positive sense of discomfort will continue until the end, or if I will be caught off guard by the ending. I’m looking forward to the conclusion.

Please tell us the highlights of the character you lent your voice to.

Ishikawa: When Ledo was in the Human Galactic Alliance, he gave the impression of being logical and level-headed. However, once he comes to Earth, that impression changes. I think he becomes someone who is gentle-hearted and will give you the shirt off of his back. On occasion, he makes mistakes and he can’t live up to the expectations placed on him. However, I think he is a good guy who is discouraged and searching for what he should do.

Kanemoto: Amy is, more or less, a straightforward and cheerful girl. I often received direction by Aketagawa (Sound Director) of him saying, “Try to act more indifferent,” and I wondered if those words really fit Amy. What’s impressive about Amy is her ability to communicate assertively with others and to not build up walls around herself.

Tomokazu: Chamber has the “Pilot Support and Development Interface System,” and I think his existence originated with Ledo. Even though he is a robot, he still has feelings, and he is good at altering the mood of a situation depending on who he is talking to. Before each recording, I find out more and more about him and this comes through (in the recording).

Lastly, do you have a message for the fans?

Ishikawa: Looking back, this is a work in which the world and characters are bursting with charm, and I think people will definitely enjoy it. I also gave my all in voicing Ledo, and I hope everyone enjoys it!

Kanemoto: Because this anime is an original work, I think it will hold people’s curiosity due to its great story progression that offers more and more twists and turns as you watch it. I hope many people will watch it. Thank you for your support.

Tomokazu: Personally, I think the work has a familiar theme for most everyone because it features a "story of the future that may be at hand." I think the theme isn’t too weak that it is diluted and not too strong that it hits you over the head, and I think fans will definitely enjoy watching it. Thanks for all the support.
