  • The World that Rots Yet Grows

This original character appears quite often on my business cards and blog. Her name is Rimone (temporary). I have been drawing characters since as far back as I can remember, and the growth of my characters has complemented mine. The background in this piece is themed around a natural harmony, so the viewer is free to imagine what the world looks like around her.

  • Garden of Recollection

This work is of Reisen Udongein Inaba (right) and Teru (left) from Touhou. The characters appear in an extensive bamboo thicket. The uniquely peaceful air has a tinge of nostalgia to it. I think this piece captures the feeling of the connectedness between the characters and the background.

  • The Color of Winter

This is a work I contributed to the Touhou doujin magazine “The Color of Winter”, which was sold at Comic Market 79. Nabe goes with winter, and parties go with nabe. I tried to express a scene with a noisy, clamouring atmosphere. Everyone was extremely happy when the magazine launched. Looking at this piece, I can clearly remember how I felt then.

  • Fallen Angel

This is a fantasy piece. I took a picture of an apartment building under construction and used this as the base. I then repainted it and combined it with a giant butterfly. This may bring to mind the dread associated with monsters, but in the end, it’s a harmless butterfly that adapts smoothly to the human world. It’s the kind of image that makes you look up and say, “Oh! The butterfly has stopped!” By the way, this is the building I currently live in. (haha)

    Technique

    Technique

I specialize in digital work and do all my illustrations, from rough draft to completion, on PC. I first start by drawing the lines, the I will add color one layer at a time as is the typical process used when coloring in anime. For coloring I use Paint Tool SAI, and for adding effects and color correction I use Adobe Photoshop.

    Image Concept

I make sure that not only do the characters have appeal, but also the background. I am also constantly thinking about composing them in a way that shows a peculiar side of the world so that it’s not just an ordinary drawing. I draw a variety of characters depending on my mood, including characters from popular works such as Touhou and The Idolmaster, as well as original characters. I usually draw backgrounds that contain whimsical and natural scenery.
